The Importance of Vision

Vision is key on the spiritual path. It is what guides our intentions, our actions, and our way of being. It is this horizon of possibility that I am so eager to share.

What does the Tibetan Buddhist vision offer us? That we are what we seek. That beneath our habitual ways of identifying ourselves, our roles, and our definitions of who we are, there is a pure life force, capable of embracing everything with confidence and equanimity.

Utopia? No—nothing could be more concrete than this vision. It is what guides our daily decisions; it is what nourishes our aspirations and keeps us on course.

For we have a choice regarding our “refuge.” In Buddhism, we take refuge in the Buddha (the guide), the Dharma (the teachings), and the Sangha (the community of the heart, with its values that support our deepest humanity).

Let’s ask ourselves this question every day. In what do we take refuge? In ambition, accumulation, the fear of lacking, of not being enough, or of others? Are our actions guided by mistrust, doubt, or fear? Or by love, openness, and sharing?

Every time we choose to align ourselves with an intention that is open-hearted, generous, and trusting, we come a little closer to our true nature.
